Amy Sherald is an American painter. Her painting style has been called “simplified realism”. Most of her work is portrait work depicting African Americans in everyday settings. She uses gray in her skin tones which she says is “intended to challenge conventions about skin color and race”. At age 51, she has over 30 pieces of artwork to her name. Her most famous painting is “First Lady Michelle Obama” which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
