What is it?

500 Books Before Middle School is an exciting, ongoing reading challenge for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. As you read, you’ll earn prizes each time you reach a 50-book milestone. The goal is to read 500 books before you enter middle school, with the challenge to be completed by June 30th of your 5th grade year.

While 500 books may sound like a lot, you have plenty of time to reach your goal. By reading just two books each week, you’ll complete 104 books a year, making it a fun and achievable challenge!

Who can participate?

All participants must have a valid Bay-Shore Brightwaters Library Card and must currently be in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

How does it work?

  • Register here
  • Record the books you read along the way. We will keep track of the books for you.
  • You will be emailed a certificate for every 50-book milestone. Bring your certificate to the children’s desk to claim your prize.
  • There is no set list of books to read for this reading challenge. We just ask that you read books that are appropriate for your reading level. Fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, audiobooks and ebooks all count.
  • You may only enter books that you have finished after your registration date, not books you have already read.
